A TC question

by jiangyrebekah Mon Jul 14, 2014 9:18 am

I got confused about a TC question on page 106 of TC book(3rd ed). In the quesion no.15, I think venality, graft, and payola all mean somelike bribery. So, I don't know why we must choose the latter two to be right answers. Please help me. Thanks.

Hey Jiangy,

Not quite. Venality is "susceptibility to bribery," it is not actually money. The sentence, however, requires a word that means "money." If we put "venality" in, we'd see this:

...will fail to attenuate the influence of "susceptibility to bribery," which doesn't just buy speedboats and golf weekends...

See the problem? You can't buy speedboats with "venality," you can only buy speedboats with money (and both "graft" and "payola" are forms of payment).
