5lb Study guide - Chapter 22 pg 776-777 question 36 and 37

by Nadirshah Fri Sep 13, 2013 1:13 pm

Guys this is the standard deviation chapter and theres one thing common to both questions that I cannot understand. Both questions DO NOT mention that the scores are normally or equally distributed. Yet the solution assumes that the results or scores are divided equally into percentile groups.

So this leads me to my question: even if the question does not mention even distribution when it comes to percentile based questions, are we to assume the number of results per percentile will be the same for all percentiles?

Nothing on the GRE is ever anything but regularly distributed. However, the questions will always say so.

This is a separate issue. Believe it or not, percentiles don't really mesh with standard deviations. Percentiles represent 100 divisions of the data, whereas standard deviation represents only a few divisions (1, 2, or 3 standard deviations from the mean take in all data points). I recommend picking up our book on word problems and checking the statistics chapter for more info. But what you'll notice is that the questions about standard deviation never overlap with the questions about percentiles.

Good luck!
