x,3,1,12,8. If x is an integer, is the median of the 5 numb

x,3,1,12,8
If x is an integer, is the median of the 5 numbers shown greater than the average of the 5 numbers?

1) x>6
2) x is greater than the median of the 5 numbers

GMAT Prep

answer E.

1. I tried testing with numbers where x = 7, 8 , 9 , 11
Such numbers prove that 1 is sufficient.
2. this statement translates to x>8 so again x = 9 , x =11 show that 2 is sufficient.

I don't see why the answer is E. Please explain.

There is no upperlimit for both 1 and 2, so you should try with large value as well.

try x = 9, and x = 100, these values are ok for 1 alone, 2 alone, and 1 & 2 together.

Q - is the median of the 5 numbers shown greater than the average of the 5 numbers? Anwer will be Yes or NO.

x = 9 , median = 8, average < 8.. Ans: YES
x = 100, median = 8, average > 8 Ans: NO

Since you get both Yes and NO for different valuses, they are insufficient , and answer is E.
