Word Translations Chapter 2 -- p. 29 Stacy/Heather rt=d ex.

by jasonmk2000 Fri Jun 20, 2008 10:40 pm

I am confused about how to set up the rtd chart when the problem refers to two people/objects that are moving in the same direction (towards each other).

For example, on p.29 of the Word Translations guide:

Stacy and Heather are 20 miles apart and walk towards each other along the same route. Stacy walks at a constant rate that is 1 mile per hour faster than Heather's constant rate of 5 miles/hour. If Heather starts her journey 24 minutes after Stacy, how far from her original destination has Heather walked when the two meet?

How do I determine where to put "20-d miles" and "d miles" under Stacy or Heather? In the example, it shows "20-d miles" under Stacy. I am confused as to why I shouldn't put this under Stacy.

I understand how to set up time though.

Thanks for your help.

I am confused as to why I shouldn't put this under Heather (I incorrectly typed Stacey above)
