Word Translation 4th EDITION, CHPTR 8 PG 139 Q3

by kadeneclarke Thu May 12, 2011 7:29 am

I'm not reconciling the solution to Q3, Ch 8 of the Word Translation Guide. Question states "When it's 2:01 PM Sunday in Nullepart, it's Monday in Eimissan; when it's 1 PM Wednesday in Eimissan; it's Wednesday in Nullepart. Given it's noon Friday in Nullepart, what's the possible range of times in Eimissan?"

If we let X be the # of hrs ahead, based on the first part of the question - 10 <= X <= 22 (i.e.it can be as early as 12am Mon or as late as 11:59pm Mon)

Based on the 2nd part of the question - X <=11 (i.e. no later than 11:59 PM)

Given the above constraints, shouldn't 10<=X <= 11? Instead the solution has 10<=X <= 13. What am I missing?

This part: when it's 1 PM Wednesday in Eimissan; it's Wednesday in Nullepart

We know Elmissian is ahead of Nullepart, so Nullepart could be 12am (13 hours behind 1pm). There's your 13. Looks like you already have the other boundary of 10, so it's 10 < x < 13.

no. what makes you think that?

by the way, be careful bumping questions. every time you do that it puts the question at the absolute end of the queue for us to answer. bumping a question is the most effective way to cause a delay in getting your question answered..

because it starts with 2:01, not 2:00 so the first hour needs 59 min not 60 min to be covered. And 12:00 is already the second day (not 12:01

thanks for ur reply and the info on the bumping questions

cheers

when you say "it", what is it that starts at 2:01? it might help if you trace through your approach to this one so i can help you find the flaw..

I agree with walid_afarm that it should be 9:59pm Fri ~ 1:00AM Sat

24:00 (aka 12:00AM, aka 00:00 = start of the next day?)

If this is true, then it would have elapsed 9 hours and 59 minutes since 2:01pm on Sunday (Nullepart) to make it 00:00 Monday (Eimissan).

So yea.. i just searched around on the internet, it seems to me that 2:01pm + 9 hours 59 minutes = 14:01pm + 9:59 = 24:00 = 00:00 next day (Monday in Eimissan)

I guess GMAT won't make the solution depending on the edge of those two little details.

Cheers,

Hi J,

Actually Brian agrees with my calculation.
If you mean by revelation the following: "I guess GMAT won't make the solution depending on the edge of those two little details." Then yes it helps and I'm very aware of it. I think MGMAT could do a better job by mentioning that's it's an approximate answer, and such answers appear on the GMAT, as Brian mentioned.
I was surprised that I was asked to elaborate by the previous MGMAT staff because the calculation is clear.

Thanks for asking.

My test is in 10 days I don't think I'll bother with one question!

Cheers

You should not be surprised that I asked you to clarify your reasoning. In fact, you might take that as an opportunity to assess your writing and to see whether a little work on additional clarity could help you in other areas - for instance on the AWA. I only mention this because you seemed so certain that what you wrote earlier was perfectly clear, and sometimes getting some feedback from an objective source can help identify opportunities for further improvement..
