which is conclusion?

by yamini Mon May 07, 2007 12:07 am

In this below paragraph which is conclusion?

Companies tend to become more efficient over time, because as they gain experience, they learn cheaper ways to manufacture their products. For example, the cost of home computers has dropped dramatically as the industry has matured. We expect similar principles to apply tire manufactures. Since Ajax Tire has been around for nearly 50 years, it's experience will allow it to keep costs very low and profits high.

is "Ajax Tire has been around for nearly 50 years, it's experience will allow it to keep costs very low and profits high" conclusion?

or

is " Companies gain experience over time and manufactures their products in cheaper ways" is conclusion ?

Yamini,

I think the conclusion is the last sentence, "Since Ajax.......profits high". The indicator here would be "since".

Also, it makes sense to read "Since Ajax....profits high" after the sentence "Companies tend.....their products". It does not make sense if you read it the other way around. In other words, "Companies tend....their products" logically leads to the conclusion "Since Ajax....profits high", but there is no logical progression the other way around.

I hope this helps!

Hi, can you please post the source of this question? (Name of company and, if appropriate, name of book / problem number / whatever) Thanks!

According to the MGMAT critical reasoning book 'since' is related to premises.

I got this from www.sentencecorrection.com. I am not sure whether I can give that site URL. Here is the url

Yamini, I would say that the final sentence is the conclusion. Because of the premise that "Companies tend to become more efficient over time, because as they gain experience, they learn cheaper ways to manufacture their products," the author is concluding that this will hold true for Ajax Tires.
