Weak In "Clarity Of Meaning", any advice?

by Jimmy Wed Jul 09, 2008 8:54 pm

As the subject says...according to my Manhattan CATs I'm weak in the area of clarity of meaning. I find this comes into play even more in the higher level problems. Unlike other areas, I do not see how this can be fixed learning additional grammar rules. Any hint/tips/secrets! to help fix this problem?

You need to go back and study what's tripping you up when you get something wrong. WHY are you missing that some choices aren't clear or incorrectly change the meaning of the sentence? Can you understand it once you read the explanation? If so, what caused you to miss it yourself the first time around? What clues exist that could've led you to think about this issue? (e.g., an adverb moved around to different spots in different choices, the word "and" changed to "or" in some choices, that sort of thing - little differences that can make a big change in meaning.)

Start keeping a log of the clues that you tend to miss and that also can tell you a "meaning" issue is going on, and study that log!
