plz refer to Q30 from OG

the correct answer is 'protecting' .

and the explanation given for the same is

Replacing the underlined
phrase with the participle protecting creates a
modifying phrase that clearly explains the
purpose of the items of military equipment.

but on page 253 (Strategy guide) it is clearly mentioned that the present participle tells nothing about the intention.

i am assuming that intention and purpose means the same thing.

so, is the answer correct because of lack of a better answer choice or such a construction preferred to 'to protect'. ??

i.e animal-hide shields with wooden
frames were essential items of military equipment
to protect warriors against enemy arrows
and spears.
