usage of while

by goelmohit2002 Thu Oct 01, 2009 11:47 am

Hi All,

Does in GMAT...while always mean "at the same time"....

Does while by itself does not mean "although", "whereas" ?

e.g. Nikkei Rose, while DJIA Fell

Here while means
a) although
b) or "whereas"
c) or "at the same time"

Many Thanks in advance
Mohit

This concept was tested a lot in 1000 sc doc (Question 920-930). I had searched the internet and this is what was stated about these concepts

while can also be used as Whereas
It has two meanings : at the same time that and in contrast to or in comparison to something else

Although - in spite of the fact that

"while" can certainly have the latter meaning. for an example, see #19 in the first edition OG purple supplement (i think it's #21 in the second edition blue one). it's the sentence about property values and large investors.

in fact, contrast (akin to "although" or "whereas") is actually the predominant use of "while" in most formal usage. but both are acceptable.
