subjunctive

sres, each of these answer choices is a grammatical mess! Instead of attempting to explain the unexplainable, I will offer a brief overview of this use of the subjunctive.

The subjunctive form of the verb (infinitive minus the "to") is used in formal English to express the importance of something. It usually follows verbs such as recommend, insist or suggest followed by the word "that."

Examples:

The doctor recommended that she see a specialist.

The military is proposing that two additional units be sent overseas.

Dan insisted that his students study obscure grammatical constructions.
