urgent help needed. please advise

by noor_dalhousie Wed Aug 21, 2013 1:50 pm

Hi
My name is noor. I am from India. I gave GMAT and sscored dismal 660. I have been in a shock since then. I scored 50 in quant and 29 in verbal. I had done about 5 months of preparation. In these 5 months, my entire time was devoted to verbal. I had scored 27 in my diagnostic test that I gave before starting the prep. I studied zealously for 5 months. I did OG 10 and OG 13 twice ( their sc). I would Google each question on this forum and learn the concept from ROn, Stacey or Tim. Further, I had also joined coaching. I also did Manhattan sc, Aristotle sc, and practised from GMAT club forum. I also took Manhattan tests and never scored less than 35 in verbal. I admit I practised sc a lot and I did not practise cr that much. I did cr from og and practise questions from tuition. I was very confident about my sc coz my accuracy rate has 80% consistently. I admit my cr accuracy rate lingered around 50%-70%. Further, I had practised a lot of rc also. I had taken Manhattan tests n GMAT preps n I would score in the range of 680-710. I was expecting 700+ in GMAT. But the score has been shocker. I feel distraught. When I was taking the exam, I thought thatiI I was doing pretty well coz in cr I got bold face questions and evaluate the argument. RCS were very easy. I just don't know where have I faltered. I have seen people studying less than me and scoring much more than me. I feel devastated. I had put in so much effort. My confidence is shaken big time. I feel scared of working more hard. What should I do. Can I ever get to know where did I falter. And I really want to know with 29 score, approximately how many questions would have I done wrongly (assuming starting ones were wrong). I feel lost. Even if I practise sc now, maximum questions cum out to be correct. I don't know what to do. Further, please let me know which colleges can accept my score. I have 4 yrs of work ex in intellectual property ( working with IP lawyers). Please help and advise.

Please remember to read the forum guidelines before posting. Please don't "bump" your own post. We respond to all posts in order, oldest first, and the date of your post is based on the date of the last post in the thread, not the first. If you bump your own post, you will wait longer for a response.

Please also note that the forums are a free service, open to the public. Because of the volume of traffic we receive, it is not unusual to wait a week from the date of the last post (sometimes longer, especially this time of year) for a response. If you see that older posts in the same folder have not yet been answered, then you know that we haven't missed you - we just haven't gotten to your question yet.

Okay, on to your question. I know that you didn't get the score that you wanted, but 660 is quite a respectable score - give yourself some credit for getting that far!

Next, you talk about how many problems you did - I'm worried that you burned yourself out by trying to do lots and lots of questions but you didn't really learn from those questions. Most of your learning comes AFTER you have finished working on a problem. Your analysis of the problem and your own thought process afterwards is when you learn how to get better.

Read this (right now, then come back here):
https://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/inde ... lly-tests/

Does that give you an idea of how your study and test approach might not have been quite right? Your question about how many questions you got wrong - you should get lots of questions wrong. Someone scoring 27 will miss about the same number of questions as someone scoring 35. As long as you're focusing on trying to get everything right... you're going to mess up your performance on the test.

In short, you need to learn how to learn. :)

Read this (again, right now):
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... -the-gmat/

That's how you really need to learn.

Use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT(s):
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... ice-tests/

Then come back here and tell us the results of your analysis and what you think you should do based on that analysis. We'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)

Also, I'm sure that you'll find you have timing problems (because everybody has timing problems!). Read these and start practicing what they say:
