Understanding A Correct Sentence

by ab89 Wed Nov 20, 2013 1:44 pm

Hi there,

The below sentence is correct as written:

"The more the prices rise, the greater becomes the demand for a wage hike"

I have a couple quick questions / comments for the group.

Isn't it possible to make this sentence more concise without losing meaning? E.g. "As prices rise, demand for wage hikes become greater."

Otherwise, am I correct in understanding that the first part of the sentence "the more the prices rise" is a modifier, and the second part of the sentence "the greater becomes the demand for a wage hike" is in passive voice with "demand" as subject and "become" as the subject's associated verb?

Any clarity is extremely appreciated.

Thanks!
