Tutors please help.. Question on COMMA

by Guest Thu Jan 15, 2009 2:24 am

Hi Ron /Stacey/Tutors,

I have a Question on COMMA usage before and after the conjunctions such as AND or BUT. The following question is from OG and I have written few more sentences below. I know the answer is E. My question is

Query 1) I have read that if we are using a COMMA after 'AND', the sentence after 'AND' should be a complete sentence on its own. Is this correct? If not how can we validate this specially when we use BUT after a COMMA. Do we need to add a subject if there is a COMMA before BUT ?

First of all, I'm sorry, but I had to delete the portion of your post that quoted from the OG. As a result, I can't answer the part of your post where you asked about those specifics.

As to your broader question, however, perhaps this will help:

The word "and" can connect various parts of a sentence. When following a comma, the word "and" can either:
1) end a list
2) begin a new clause (not a new "sentence" but something that does have its own subject-verb pair)

We can use "and" to connect two verbs together; however, in this case there would not be a new subject as well. As such, we would just be connecting the two verbs in a parallel fashion to the original subject.

"But" functions in exactly the same way. Use the comma before "but" when you are about to begin a new clause.
