took my first MGMAT Test

by manaschhabra Wed May 11, 2011 10:22 am

Hi all,

Last saturday I took my first MGMAT test and no doubt, It gave me some real jolts. Before taking the test I had mostly been practicing from OGs. The way I practice verbal using OGs is that I attempt 10 questions of RC/CR/SC and then mostly average the time. I was pretty good, ticking the answer with 1:30 mostly. But at the test day, I panicked. In math section I took almost 7 mins to solve a problem and got it wrong. Same is the case with verbal. I happened to score 550 with many questions left in Quants and Verbal.

Later when I intended to analyze, I had the difficulty to start with. How should be analyze the CAT exam here. When I re-attempted the question (without timing), I could do so within 2 mins.

Please suggest me.. How should I analyze the tests and plan diagnose the issues in my preparation.. I target to take GMAT by the end of June.

I've been prepping the last 7 weeks or so and am also taking the exam towards the end of June. My advise would be to analyze the questions you got wrong and took more than two minutes on. Really the seven minutes you spent on that one question cost you not only that one but also wrong answers at the end when time became an issue. When I approach a question if I don't at least have the foundation of how to answer it within a minute then I try to make an educated guess ruling out as much as I can. I'm taking another practice test this weekend but for reference, I took one last weekend and scored a 710 (49/39). The timing is killing you, fix that and your score should improve drastically.

For any tech problems, please contact the office (800.576.GMAT, skype: m.gmat, studentservices@manhattangmat.com, or techsupport@manhattangmat.com)

After taking a practice test, use this article to analyze your overall results:
http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2011/02/ ... sts-part-1

That will help you to set up your study plan. You can use the below articles to help you analyze individual problems. Read the main article first, and then you can take a look at any of the 5 example articles if you want:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/a ... roblem.cfm

SC: http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/GMATprep-SC.cfm
CR: http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/CR-assumption.cfm
RC: http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/a ... estion.cfm
PS: http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/a ... roblem.cfm
DS: http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/a ... roblem.cfm

It's actually very good that you still got a 550 if you had to leave many questions blank at the end. :) Take a look at this timing article and start doing what it says:

It sounds like you may be studying on your own. You may also find this article helpful:
