* Today, more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies

by nayak.purnendu Wed Sep 30, 2009 2:48 am

Today, more than 90% of Fortune 500 companies focused on reducing variability are adopting quality control measures such as statistical process control, design for manufacturing, and Six Sigma & Taguchi methods to eliminate defects in various stages of design and manufacturing.

(A) statistical process control, design for manufacturing, and Six Sigma & Taguchi methods to eliminate
(B) statistical process control, design for manufacturing, and Six Sigma & Taguchi methods as a means to eliminating
(C) statistical process control, design for manufacturing, and Six Sigma & Taguchi methods to eliminating
(D) statistical process control, design for manufacturing, and Six Sigma & Taguchi methods for eliminating
(E) statistical process control, design for manufacturing, and Six Sigma & Taguchi methods eliminating

Can some tutor help me to understand when an infinitive is preferred to a gerund.
Why "to eliminate" is not suitable here ?
I presumed the requirement of a "purpose/intent" in this sentence.
Fortune 500 companies are adopting QCMs such as X, Y and Z to eliminate defects in various design and manufacturing.

OA: D

Please help.
