Thursdays with Ron - Organization for Word Problems

by caputo.robert Fri Jan 13, 2012 4:43 pm

Hi - can anyone explain to me the following trouble spot I'm having with understanding the 3rd and final problem; why is the currency (100 unit of currency) considered a constant rather than assigning some variable to it such as "100C"?

Thanks,
Rob

It is a constant because it is 100 units of currency of country R.

If country R were the US, it would be $100 and if country R were Japan, the constant would be 100 yens.

Hope this helps,

Tim - I guess the reason for my confusion is I keep envisioning the 100 units as a quantity rather than a sum. In other words, I interpret the 100 units as a count of 100 bills (possibly of varying denominations) rather than a count of bills that adds up to a total denomination of 100. After the explanation, I'm able to understand how this is a constant, but I can't say that I'm comfortable to the point where I wouldn't struggle with this again in the future.

Thanks,
Rob

Robert, would you be able to post the problem here?
