Three grades of milk are 1 percent, 2 percent and 3 percent

by brandon.sitz Mon Aug 23, 2010 12:49 pm

I came across the following problem in a GMAT Prep exam but still cannot seem to get the correct answer. Does anyone know the correct approach to solve this problem?

Three grades of milk are 1 percent, 2 percent and 3 percent fat by volume. If x gallons of the 1 percent grade, y gallons of the 2 percent grade, and z gallons of the 3 percent grade are mixed to give x+y+z gallons of a 1.5 percent grade, what is x in terms of y and z?
a. y + 3z
b. (y +z) / 4
c. 2y + 3z
d. 3y + z
e. 3y + 4.5z

nice find.

yes, please search the forums for questions before you post them -- especially questions with lots of text, such as this one; this is a very easy question to search.
we understand if you have a hard time searching problems that have little or no text (e.g., problems that just contain a bunch of variables and math symbols), but PLEASE search the text of problems that contain lots of words. we don't need a proliferation of new threads for problems that already have existing threads!

thanks.
