The use of "reveal"

by b96303012 Wed Jul 27, 2011 9:39 am

Following is a a choice of question No. 4 of the SC bonus question bank:

When viewed from a distance, Saturn's main ring may appear smooth and continuous, but close viewing REVEALS them to be composed of thousands of separate icy ringlets.

In the Sentence Correction Strategy Guide, the correct usage of REVEAL is:
The analysis revealed that the comet was mostly ice.

And that it stated that the following usage is wrong:
The analysis revealed the comet to have been mostly ice.

Since that the answer choice somehow contradicts with the strategy guide, I would like to know the correct grammar of using "reveal". Thank You!
