The placement of modifiers

by CrystalSpringston Wed Sep 23, 2015 10:35 pm

Hi Instructor,

I have a question on the modifiers of below sentence. would you pls lend me a hand? Thank you.

The telephone Bell, invented in 1870 and named for the scientist who made it , is one of most important inventions in 19 and 20 centuries.

Whether we can combine the modifiers together like above? My worry is the subjective is a little bit far away from the verb in this way.

If it is acceptable by GMAT. My next question is that which one is better, compared to below:

Invented in 1870, the telephone Bell, named for the scientist who made it ,is one of most important inventions in 19 and 20 centuries.

In addition, would you pls forward me the link of the detailed explanations for such questions regarding the sequence of multiple modifiers? If there exists. Thank you.

These sentences make no sense. Where did you find them?

I exactly "duplicated" one new OG question with some change.

if you replace "the telephone Bell" with "the Bell telephone" then these sentences make sense.

both versions are fine. the second is a bit strange-looking, but it's not incorrect.

i'm not sure what 'link' you're asking for, but any such thing would be irrelevant to this problem, because neither of your examples contains a 'sequence of multiple modifiers'.
(invented... AND named... has two parallel parts, but it's still one modifier.)

more importantly—OG is a banned source here.

this extends not only to the text of the problems, but also to discussion of the problems. (it does not mean "let's just ask about OG problems without quoting them", since that would render the whole prohibition meaningless.)

thank you.
