The Guggenheim Museum in New York City

by ujjavalgupta Sun Apr 04, 2010 9:58 am

Source: Manhattan Test Series.

Though Frank Lloyd Wright is best remembered today because of bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, most of his buildings were intended to blend into their surroundings.

A) because of bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum

B) for bold designs such as the one for the Guggenheim Museum

C) because of bold designs such as the Guggenheim Museum

D) because of bold designs such as that for the Guggenheim Museum

E) for bold designs like the Guggenheim Museum's

I was confused in Option B and Option E.

The explanation says that Such as should be used to introduce examples, but we also use Like for nouns.

"Second, "like" is incorrect because the Guggenheim is a specific example and the use of "such as" would be more appropriate to introduce examples."

I am confused in proper usage difference between like and such as

like is mostly used for comparison purpose. In this case the author wants to mention Guggenheim museum as an example for good design. So option A and E are out. C is out because it gives museum as an example and not its design. D is lengthy, awkward and uses improper construction such as that for. So the correction option will be B.
