the difference between OTHER and ANY OTHER

by terrace.hoer Fri Dec 14, 2012 11:56 pm

Here I have two sentences.
Could anyone tell me whether the comparison in the two sentences is different?

(1) Boreal owls range over a much larger area than do other owls of similar size.
(2) Some boreal owls range over an area two times larger than the area over which any other owl of similar size ranges.

I'm told that the second sentence is comparing different groups of boreal owls, while the first one is making a comparison between boreal owls and other owls.

Is there any different!? not the same?
Really confused.

Thanks for your help;)

In the first example we are comparing the Owls but I think in second example we are comparing the Area.

So you think that any other owl has the same meaning as other owls in the given context, don't you?

As I'm not a native speaker. I deem those two the same thing always...

Thanks very much:)

I don't think I get your question. Can you please rephrase it?

Here, "other owls" means all owls other than the boreal owls, right?
I am asking if "any other owl" expresses the same meaning as "other owls".

Do these two phrases both mean all owls other than the boreal owls?

Hope this will be clear to you.

Thanks a lot!

I believe yes. As per my understanding these two mean all owls other than the boreal owls.

in both of these sentences, the second half of the comparison refers to owls (of the specified size) in general, not just to boreal owls.

the problem with the second sentence, though, is that it doesn't really make sense.
see, the given description -- owl X ranges over a much larger area than does any other owl -- can only apply to one type of owl. so, this description is incompatible with "some boreal owls" (which seems to imply several kinds of boreal owls).

analogy:
The Big Tower in Cashville is over twice as tall as any other building in the city.
--> makes sense
There are several buildings in Cashville that are over twice as tall as any other building in the city.
--> doesn't make sense, since "over twice as tall as any other building" can't logically describe more than one building.
