The criteria for tagging questions in MGMAT cats

by saiindukuri87 Sun Jan 16, 2011 12:17 pm

Hi,
Can I know the criteria Manhattan GMAT follows in taging a question in MGMAT cat in the range of 700-800 or 600-700. I have taken two MGMAT cats and I found at most the taging is appropriate but few questions at 700-800 appeared to be easy, while few questions at 600-700 appeared difficult.

That's because your individual strengths and weaknesses do not match the collective strengths and weaknesses of the entire testing population.

The difficulty levels are based on how our students actually do on the questions. When we post a new question for the first time, we make our best guess. As soon as the question has been given to enough students (minimum of 200 across different scoring buckets - up to 1,000 total) that we've collected good data, we have a program that analyzes the data and tells us what difficulty level the question actually is. And then we adjust the level in the test.

You will always feel that certain questions are easier or harder than the official rating - because you're basing your assessment on your own strengths and weaknesses, that's all. :)
