such that vs. so that

by hmgmat Sun Apr 19, 2009 8:25 pm

Few questions:
- Is there such a term called "such that"? I don't see it in Longman and on dictionary.com. But "such [noun] that" does exist tho.
- If "such that" does exist, then what's the difference between "such that" and "so that"?
Thanks in advance.

"Such that" means "in such a way that"
"So that" means "with the intention that"

For example, "He arranged the cards such that they would not fall." This sentences emphasizes the way in which the cards were arranged.

Or, "He arranged the cards so that they would not fall." This sentence emphasizes his purpose for arranging the cards, not the way in which he arranged them.

See the difference?
