such as + and/or

by detergentboy Sun Jan 20, 2013 6:45 pm

I have a couple of questions:

1.) can the last element of the list introduced by 'such as' be preceded by an 'or' instead of an 'and' ?
e.g.:
I will only call him a statistician if he uses tools such as regression, co-relation AND analysis of variance.

I will only call him a statistician if he uses tools such as regression, co-relation OR analysis of variance.

I'm skeptical of the 'OR' construction. I don't think I have seen it yet in an official question. Is it something to do with restrictive and non-restrictive clauses?
Would love to have some clarity on this.

2.) If, the answer to the above question is 'yes', then do the standard 'or' and 'and' definitions apply to the list.
e.g.:
I will only call him a statistician if he uses tools such as regression, co-relation AND/OR analysis of variance.

will an 'and' mean he has to use all the tools? and an 'or' means he can use any?

thank you

i don't think this question is relevant in the slightest, which should come as excellent news because that's one less thing you have to study! :) as you mentioned, i've never seen this show up on a GMAT problem, so it's probably not important. furthermore, as to question 2, if X/Y/Z are examples, it will make no difference if we say "X, Y, and Z" versus "X, Y, or Z", because the fact that they're examples means that NONE of them are required to actually materialize..
