Subj/Verb Agreement

Hi,

Can someone please explain which one is correct..

1) Twenty-five dollars was/were just bid. --->was or were?
2) John bid the price up on the Lamp --->is this sentence correct

Hi Ron,in addition to above can you please let us know or point in the right direction.
1) For a particular long SC question,where the entire sentence in underlined,how do you suggest we should analyse the sentence-to save time on GMAT.
2) I am going over previous posts-and there are couple of those which have been delelted/banned.While deleting such posts can you please either delete them completly or atlease the subject can be edited as well..so that user does not have to waste time going through a deleted post.
