Study Organizer - OG problems

by jeffboaz Tue Jun 30, 2009 6:26 pm

Hey Stacy,

I'm following the Study organizer step by step - doing every in-action problem/OG problem/readings etc it says.

Is there anything the Study organizer is leaving out? Will it eventually go over every OG problem?

At the end of the course, do you just go through all the questions from 1 to 200?

just curious - making sure I do EVERYTHING I possibly can.

Great question. The study organizer will actually cover every single OG problem, as well as all of the in-action problems. I usually counsel my students to save a significant chunk of OG problems for review after the course though (unless someone has to take the test right after the course ends). Typically, my students will just set aside either the entire OG12 or both supplemental books (purple and green) for after.

You're definitely going to want to do some review, and you're also going to need to build the ability to recognize what a new problem is testing. When you're doing problems only from a certain chapter in your strategy guide, you already know what's about to be tested before you even see the problem (at least, you know the category). The real test doesn't tell you, "Hey, I'm about to give you a divisibilty problem" - you have to figure that out. So save some to do in mixed sets; that will allow you to build this crucial recognition skill.

Hey Stacy,

Question about the Study Organizer. Why are each of the DS "Drill Approach" OG problem sets scheduled prior to the completion of the Number Properties text? I have those showing as Day 3 of week 1, having only completed PEMDAS and Strategies for DS in the book on days 1, 2. I'm doing self prep and it seems like we should go through the totality of Number Properties before tackling DS in overlapping sets, triangles etc. Thanks!

The DS sets are in there because the first week of class includes DS strategy lessons (such as rephrasing) - so those sets are designed to help you with the DS lessons. If you haven't watched the first class (not sure if you're doing the self prep that includes the tapes of classes), then don't do those sets.

In general, by the way, tailor your prep to your own strengths and weaknesses and general learning style - so you can move things around. You don't have to follow the syllabus exactly.

Also, I advise some students not to do any of the mixed sets until about week 5 or so - if it's been a really long time since you've looked at any of the math, for example, then you're going to get frustrated by doing the mixed sets before you've covered all of the material. (But don't forget that you do need to start feeding those mixed sets in after a certain number of weeks!)
