study guide chapter 3 , in action problem 4.

my frist step was to square both sides of the equation, including the 5 - so it became 25.
then i subtracted 25 from both sides and, and had -y^2 = -16
so y = +/-4.

i understand how the book solved the problem, but i dont understand why my method didnt work.
