Strategy to Tackle an SC Question

by AnujC85 Tue Jan 26, 2016 9:31 am

MGMAT 1 - 620
MGMAT 2 - 640
MGMAT 3 - 610

GMAT - 600 Q44 V28 (September 2015)

I used to score around 26-28 in every other MGMAT or GMAT test. Later, I discovered Powerscore CR Bible. This book really opened my eyes towards the way a question is made and what the question actually wants you to answer. It also enabled me to understand why the wrong answers seem so attractive at first, but actually are not. This insight imparted by CR Bible raised my verbal score to regularly around 34-35 in various tests. I wish you would suggest some books similar to the Bible for SC. I have already gone through the MGMAT SC and Aristotle SC. Both these books tell us about the core knowledge that we require, but, they do not give us an insight on how to tackle a question. How to look for the errors. I generally end up scrutinizing every angle of a sentence and it takes a lot of time. So, please help me, I really want to do well in Verbal, since, there is hardly any scope for me to improve in Quants. I regularly receive scores of 46-49 in various tests. A suggestion in SC would really take me a long way towards achieving my target score of 700.

We do most of that kind of "second level" teaching in class (or in our Interact lessons) for SC. But I can give you links to some free resources that talk about those principles, too.

First, do make sure that you're following the overall process described in the first chapter of our SC guide. I'm guessing you're familiar with that already, since you said you have done that book.

Here are more ways to train yourself on what to pick out during a First Glance:

Here is a series on how to strip the sentence down to its core components:

Also, search our blog (or use the tags) to find other SC articles. A lot of them are just giving you a problem at the beginning and then taking you through that problem, so that you can see the thought process. That can be really useful, as SC questions don't fall into neat "sub-categories," the way CR and RC do.

Do you have access to our GMAT Navigator program? It's the program that has our own solutions for a bunch of OG problems (among other features). Search through and watch the video solutions for any that have videos. (Maybe 80 SCs from OG2015 have video solutions. I'm not sure how many that translates to for OG2016 - I haven't looked to see which ones were dropped and replaced by new questions.)

Start with video solutions for problems that you got right or that you thought were easier. Use that to confirm your thinking and to see whether there was anything else you could have used to eliminate or choose. Work your way up to medium and then harder ones.

Finally, you may also want to check out some of the Thursdays with Ron archive classes; he's got a lot of good stuff.
