Strategy for Sentence Correction

by giteshr Mon Oct 11, 2010 12:54 am

I have joined the MGMAT live online class and am following the syllabus. After class-2, and 3 chapters of SC MGMAT book, I'm still not getting hold on the benchmark problems as mentioned at the end of each chapter.

I face the following problems:
1. do not understand the stuff, with no splits to find
2. wrong subject identified in the sentence
3. other grammar techniques are not known, so i cannot re-split and reach to the answer
4. for questions that I get correct, time is always 3-4 minutes.

At this point I'm beginning to think that i'm not going to make it up, as I cannot get hold of things even after 2 weeks of course and proper study.

What is lacking here - is a big question.
Appreciate your help to help me out.

Thanks,
Gitesh

First, just be aware that sentence correction problems test "mixed" skills - that is, multiple grammar rules are tested in each problem. You may get part of it (and eliminate some answers), but you may then need to know something that you haven't learned yet... so you're not going to know what to do with those other answers! That's okay.

Second, sign up for office hours right now and spend the session getting extra help on SC. Repeat this every week for as long as you need! (And when you no longer need extra SC help, sign up for office hours anyway and talk about something else!)

Third, these articles might be helpful:

http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/sc-layering.cfm

Finally, make sure your teacher knows that you're struggling with SC. He or she can pay special attention in class during SC lessons and give you pointers. Also, speak up during class. You might feel mildly embarrassed if you answer something incorrectly, but you're learning, so who cares? The learning is the most important part. :)

Thanks Stacey.
I got in touch with my class instructors sharing with them my concerns with SC portion.

For the office hours there are couple of things to ask, but the time doesn't permits. It ends with questions from the guides, leaving almost no time for OG problems.

And thanks for the links to the articles, interesting and useful.

Thanks, Gitesh

I'd also recommend getting to class early in order to ask additional questions - we teachers are always just sitting around for 15 minutes or so waiting for class to start and that's a perfect time to ask a question!

Also, you can check the forum archives here for OG questions. We can't, unfortunately, post them online anymore (for copyright reasons), but there is an archive of questions up from before the ban, so you can still search and read what we had to say then. If the problem was posted and discussed previously, then you may be able to learn what you need from the prior discussion!
