Stem question confusion CR

by gunjan.kapil7 Fri Oct 12, 2012 12:13 pm

After graduating form high school, people rarely
multiply fractions or discuss ancient Rome, but they
are confronted daily with decisions relating to home
economics. Yet whereas mathematics and history are
required courses in the high school curriculum, home
economics is only an elective, and few students choose to take it.

Which of the following positions would be best
supported by the considerations above?
(A) If mathematics and history were not required
courses, few students would choose to take them.
(B) Whereas home economics would be the most
useful subject for people facing the decisions
they must make in daily life, often mathematics
and history can also help them face these decisions.
(C) If it is important to teach high school students
subjects that relate to decisions that will
confront them in their daily lives, then home
economics should be made an important part
of the high school curriculum.
(D) Mathematics, history, and other courses that
are not directly relevant to a person's daily
life should not be a required part of the high
school curriculum.
(E) Unless high schools put more emphasis on
nonacademic subjects like home economics,
people graduating from high school will
never feel comfortable about making the
decisions that will confront them in their
daily lives.

What are we trying to solve or find?? Must be true/main point/ paradox??

If it is must be true then how is option c the correct answer (sorry to post the answer) because option c is giving a suggestion.

The fact I couldn't understand the stem question is demotivating. I spent a lot of time on the question to understand the reasoning for option c but couldn't.

Pls help!

Hello again,

I re-did the question and below is my understanding.

Stem question: is asking to pick the right opinion/position that would be "supported by the above mentioned statements/facts."

Stimulus: compares subjects on basis of daily life usage i.e. maths and history are not used in daily life but are still the requried subjects however home economics is used in daily life but is a elective subject.

Therefore, if it is about daily life decisions, schools should make home economics as a requrired subject. This is addressed in option C.

OPTIONS
A: This is not what we are dealing with. We are dealing with subjects in terms of daily life.
B: two things. One it talks about "people facing decision" -- not in stimulus . Two,Isn't it contradicting info given in stimulus? Stimulus says "people rarely use maths or history" and the option "maths and history help "often" help them to take decisions.
C: the prephrase answer
D: Stimulus doesnt talk about "other courses"
E: Too strong words.

Please correct me.

I would appreciate help with the stem question.

i don't know what a "strong prephrase answer" is, and i'm not sure you have asked a question about the options you have listed. i am happy to answer a question if you ask one..

This is a "Find the conclusion" question.

A. Does not mention 'Home Economics'. Hence eliminated.
B. Sounds ok. So keeping it for now.
C. Logically follows the flow of the argument. Contender.
D. "Other courses" out of scope. Also "should not be required part of curriculum" ?? It should be more like, "Home Economics should be included in required part of the curriculum." The argument does not insist on removing Maths/History from the required part of the curriculum. Eliminated.
E. Unless & Never - Strong words. Eliminated.

Between B and C, I chose C because it logically follows the argument. But I am not too sure why B is wrong. Can someone pls explain? Thanks !
