Slow but correct - overlapping sets

by denisevflowers Sun Nov 24, 2013 11:42 am

Hi all,

I've noticed a pattern over my CAT exams that I tend to get overlapping sets questions correct, but they are a super super slow area (>3 minutes/question.) I'm taking the test this week, so I'm not sure that I'll be able to get much faster before test day.

If I see one of these questions on the test, should I just "strategic guess" it, (since they've been taking up too much of my time) or give it a shot since I've been getting them right?

Thanks,
Denise

Good question. Most people should just make a strategic guess and move on, because that extra time you're spending has to come from other problems. No sense in rushing on a couple of other problems to try to make up the extra 1+ minutes you're spending on this type.

If you find yourself in the unusual position of having extra time, then go ahead and try it. Most people don't have this luxury on the GMAT!

Because you do ultimately get these right, you can probably figure out ways to narrow down the answers more quickly. Go back and look at some of the problems you've done in the past. What would you need to figure out in order to tell that the answer is probably one of the lower numbers or the higher numbers or whatever? There's your strategic guessing method. :)

Good luck!
