simulated question OG SC-14 - Nate Robinson traded !!

by rajkapoor Thu Feb 18, 2010 9:51 pm

This made-up question simulates the OG 12th ed. SC-14 question.
(in case this simulated version is unclear, please refer to the original question while explaining the solution)

Nate Robinson, three time dunk champion , was traded to Celtics by Knicks but had been scoring above 30 in last 10 games.

The original sentence itself is correct.

I need help with these two answer choices.

i)was traded to Celtics by Knicks although scoring above 30 in last 10 games.
ii) was traded to Celticks by Knicks although having been scoring above 30 in last 10 games.

the issue with both these choices has been cited as missing subject and incomplete verb(in this case:scoring)

I assumed that construction such as "Although favorite of the crowd, he never won an Oscar" was fine ....

plus if I were to move 'Although and the remaining part' in front, wouldn't it show right contrast such as
Although scoring above 30 in last 10 games, Nate was traded to Celtics by Knicks.
Although having been scoring above 30 in last 10 games, Nate was traded to Celtics by Knicks.
i ask so i can answer / i answer so i can learn

I believe that I was able to figure out the issue.

Although is a subordinating conjunction ,and thus needs a subject in its clause(rather claws) - pretty basic ..huh.. :(

So the answer to "Although favorite of the crowd, he never won an Oscar".
should be
either "Although he was favorite of the crowd,he never won an Oscar"
or
"Despite being favorite of the crowd, he never won an Oscar"

This above info eliminates the choices with missing subject in 'although' clause.

suspect sentence: "Despite favorite of the crowd , he never won an Oscar"
would this be the correct?

hi -

yeah, normally "although" takes an entire clause.

the exception, though, is that "although" (and also "though") can also just be followed by an adjective, or by something else that acts as an adjective (such as a participle).

e.g., although neglected for over a century, the artifact has recently been lovingly restored.

by the way - what's up with the really small type?
