Sentence Correction : Chapter 5 : Q14

by gmat_jul Wed Jul 02, 2008 11:51 pm

"We enjoy meeting people having different interests"

This has been corrected as
"We enjoy meeting people who have different interests"

Isn't the original sentence correct? To my understanding "having different interests" is clearly modifying people. Although 2nd sentence is also correct but original one is less wordy. Request to please clarify the reason for marking original sentence as incorrect. Thanks

It is correct that "having different interests" would modify the noun "people" if there is no comma between them. However, this sentence could be understood to mean that we enjoy meeting people as they are in the process of having different interests. The intended meaning is that we enjoy meeting people of a certain type: "people who have different interests" conveys that idea more clearly.
