Ineq Problem: Question for Ron

Is x less than 20? Question: Is x less than 20? (St 1): The sum of x and y is less than 20. (St 2): y is less than 20. OA is E. My problem is not seeing why E is correct. Eliminating 1 & eliminating 2 is easy. Also, if you pick numbers, it's relatively straightforward to see why E is correct and...

Is x less than 20? Ron? Stacey? Others?

Question: Is x less than 20? (St 1): The sum of x and y is less than 20. (St 2): y is less than 20. From GMAT prep software. OA is E. My problem is NOT seeing why E is correct. I can easily pick numbers and prove why that is so. The thing that has me baffled is why a straightforward algebraic approa...

Re: Is xy > 0 ?

To Ron: Ron, if you get a chance, could you look at the other GMAT prep ineq question I posted: "Is x less than 20?" As you'll note in my question there, I have always used the rule you refer to in your response above when solving ineqs: namely, if the ineq signs are pointed in the same di...

Re: Is x less than 20? Ron? Stacey? Others?

Whups, slight correction to my earlier post: the prior forum question I was referring to (that Ron had commented on with the suggestion "add two inequalities if their signs are pointed in the same direction") was: "Is xy > 0?"

Re: can somebody help me out with this question?

Ron, WOULD it be correct to have a comma, rather than a dash in answer choice B? In other words, can you have back-to-back appositives set off by commas (given of course that the appositive was correct, as in B)?

Many thanks. And a lesson I won't soon forget! (that's how it works, doesn't it.)

Appositives vs Absolute Phrases: ? about Ron Post

This is a question that originally came up when I reviewed Ron's answer to the question: "The number of people flying first class on domestic flights rose sharply in 1990, doubling the increase of the previous year." Ron, you wrote the following: "In this case, you can't use "......

Re: Appositives vs Absolute Phrases: ? about Ron Post

An addition to my earlier post...per my question about whether ABSOLUTE PHRASES contain a verb (as opposed to APPOSITIVES, which do not), I came across more detail in the glossary of my Manhattan SC book that further muddies things for me. One of the example sentences for an ABSOLUTE PHRASE is "...

Re: new forum priorities

The category "course students" makes sense but what is the "students" category? I've recently purchased one of the SC books and plan on buying others over time. Does this make me a "student"? I've entered the code from my code in my profile. I've posted a question relat...

Re: Appositives vs Absolute Phrases: ? about Ron Post

Thanks Raj. Interesting comments. I'm looking forward to hearing Ron's take. While it may seem like an arcane question, I think it gets to a critical issue, which is the whole question of how to modify a prior clause vs just the prior word. Instructors, Ron, Stacey, et al, looking forward to your th...

Re: new forum priorities

Stacey, By the way, if you were interested in sharing your thoughts on the question I posted (about an appositive vs an absolute phrase ), I'd be THRILLED. I've been extremely impressed by how insightful your responses are. Also, I think the question may be an interesting one that could help some of...
