I understand. So "designated" can't be the working verb because the snake is the object of the designation and not the subject. Thanks

Although and -ing form

The Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction book tells that

Although I take frequent naps, I study effectively


is correct, while

I study effectively although taking frequent naps


is wrong.

Why is the second sentence wrong ?

Despite is a preposition and can be followed by a noun or a present participle acting like a noun, right?
