the use of being""

Is the function of "being" different in these two sentences. 1.Being heavily committed to a course of action, especially one that has worked well in the past is likely to make an executive miss signs of incipient trouble or misinterpret them when they do appear. (Source: gmat prep; also in...

Re: SC:is descended or has descended ?

Hi Ron, I have read through all the previous post and found your explanation really enlightening, but I am still confused about choice B. I understand that "a kind of snorkel" clearly must be something that evolved while the elephant's predecessor was still living in the sea. But I think t...

Re: SC:is descended or has descended ?

Hello Ron again, thanks a ton for your clarification! After reading your post, I finally came to realize that what we are talking is about the evolution of its trunk as a snorkel, so at that time the trunk was a actually a snorkel. Since snorkel existed long time ago, the process must have taken pla...

Re: compared with VS as compared to

Hi Ron,

I understand that there's no difference between "compared to" and "compared with", but I really have no idea about "as compare to/with".How do they function?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Heavy commitment by an executive to a course of action

Hi RON, though I have read your explanation on choice A, but I have a similar doubt with a former student. Can't the "it" in A be a placeholder? Since I can't figure out the difference between the example given as a usage of placeholder it in the post you linked to and the one in choice A,...

Re: the use of being""

Hi Ron, Thanks a lot for your reply. So do you mean that the usage in the first sentence is like "being adjective" verb object. Committed in this sentence is an adjective rather than a v-ed? Additionally, can we just change the first several words in to a noun phrase? EG. Heavy commitment ...

Re: compared with VS as compared to

Hello Ron, For further clarification, I found some official sentences here. 1. A recent review of pay scales indicates that, on average, CEO's now earn 419 times the pay of blue-collar workers, as compared to 42 times their pay, the ratio in 1980. 2. Minivans carry as many as seven passengers and, c...

Re: can somebody help me out with this question?

Hello Ron, I have read through the previous posts on this forum and found that people regard the "--fewer than those killed by bee stings" part as an appositive. But I thought APPOSITIVE is something like "noun + noun modifier" as defined in the Manhattan Guide for SC. I actually...

Re: prep sc question

hi Ron, I remember that you said comparison is a kind of parallelism. for E, Nowhere in early American literature is it more apparent that Jane Austen had an influence than the novels of James Fenimore Cooper. I think they can perfectly parallel to each other. Am I wrong? waiting for your help! than...

Re: prep sc question

further clarification for the previous post: I actually had difficulty in picking the parts that are supposed to be parallel for comparison problems specifically, since I think parallels in the normal paralleled structures, i.e. with marker such as "AND", "BOTH...AND..." , are ea...

Besides adding complementary flavors (they VS these)

Besides adding complementary flavors to many foods, hot sauces stimulate the release of endorphins in the brain, just as exercise does, and these have a pain-relieving effect like morphine's. Until the passage of the Piracy and Counterfeiting

Until the passage of the Piracy and Counterfeiting Amendments Act in 1982, a first-time charge of copyright infringement was merely a misdemeanor charge, federal prosecutors being unlikely in pursuing criminal copyright infringers, while offenders were subject to relatively small penalties. A. charg...

helping verb omission and comparison

Hello instructor, I found these on page 253 of the Manhattan SC guide: The first instance of the verb should usually match the helping verb in tense. If you need to change tenses, repeat the whole verb in the new tense. Wrong: I have never seen an aardvark, but last year my father DID. Right: I have...
