Re: GMAT Prep 1 - DS If Carlos took 1/2 hour to travel....

The short cut to this is to stop and think for a second: 1) Lets say he lived exactly 6 miles away. Set up our equation: D=RT 6miles=R(1/2 hour) R=12miles per hour 2) Now we realizes that Carlos would have to travel at exactly 12mph to reach the library and live a half hour away. Because the stems g...

Re: If 2^x - 2^x-2 = 3*(2)^13, What is the value of x?

2x - 2^(x-2) = 3(2^13), what is x? 1) We can see from the statement that we are going to be working with the number 2 raised to a power. This is important, because there are patterns when taking the number 2 to a power. 2) Lets examine the LHS 2^x - 2^(x-2) by picking numbers and looking for a patte...

Re: Six machines, each working at the same constant rate

It does not need to be so complicated. 1) Each machine has the same constant rate, so just choose 1 as the rate. (or 2 if you do not like picking 1 as a number). 2) Calculate the number of units produced by the 6 machines in 12 days at their constant rate of 1: 6*12*1=72units! 3) Calculate the numbe...

If x is an integer, is 2x less than 80? HELP MATH TROUBLE

I am having trouble with the math used in the explanation. Please read: If x is an integer, is 2^x less than 80? (1) 4^x-1 < 4^x - 120 (2) x^2 = 36 ----------- Since 26 = 64 and 27 = 128, 2x will be less than 80 only if the integer x is less than 7. So, we can rephrase the question as follows: &...

Re: CR: According to a study more than 50,000 Norwegian smokers

Please advise, as I disagree with the question/answer. According to a study of more than 50,000 Norwegian smokers, smokers who reduced their nicotine intake from cigarettes, even by up to 50 percent, did not achieve significant health benefits . The mortality rate for those who cut back on cigarette...

Candidate for Mayor: My opponent argues that the

Candidate for Mayor: My opponent argues that the best way to increase the city's tax revenues is to double the tax on rental cars so that non-residents provide the bulk of the additional income. This plan is unethical because it constitutes taxation without representation: we should not excessively ...

Use of "this" as a pronoun

"However, the GMAT doesn't permit the use of "this" as a pronoun (without a noun following)" -MGMAT -Can someone explain this to me? Is this true - if whenever we say "this" on gmat as a pronoun, we need to follow with a noun... What if the noun is in the sentence befor...

Re: Private Aircraft (MGMAT CAT Verbal CR Test # 2)

I have a problem with OA answer choice E. Federal law prohibits businesses from reimbursing any employees for the cost of owning and operating a private aircraft that is used for business purposes. Thus, many American companies themselves purchase private aircraft. The vast majority of the business ...

Ah yes - I see it now. Stepping back from the problem and then coming to it again a few days later with a clear mind helps. Choice A is clearly the best answer. Choice B may also be a little out of scope.

Thanks guys.

Re: In the xy-plane, what is the y-intercept

I got tricked on my last test in this when i arrived at 0=0. I said "ah hah, always true, must be sufficient"... But in reality, this equation does not tell us anything to answer the question.

Re: A thin piece of wire 40 metres long is cut into two pieces.

I chose to cut the rope into two parts. I chose 8 and 32, keeping in mine one number had to be divisible by 4 (for the square). If I used the 32 inch piece for the square, that means it has sides of 8. And an area of 64. Looking at the answer choices, I realize I only need to calculate the area of t...
