Subtraction rules encountered for a DS question

Since the DS question is from official guide, I'm not putting the question in entirety but need to discuss the concept used. Information in Question: 3 numbers - k, l, m; no other information like k,l,m NE 0 or integers or anything else. Test condition concept: k-(l+m) can be equal to (k-l)+(k-m) if...

Re: NP 4th Edition Chapter 10, In Action Page 133 Problem 10

This means that remainders for 'a' and 'b' when divided by 7 are same. This is a conclusion you can draw if 'a' is not divisible by 7 but a-b is. for example, if a=15, then b must be 8 or 1 to be divisible by 7 (considering only positive numbers but it doesn't matter if you consider -ve too). So you...

Re: painted caves at Lascaux and Altamira

As I can break it down:
1. For the first subject-verb agreement, it "The period" + "has/have" - so it eliminates C, D, & E.
2. The subject is "the reason for their decoration" and hence verb must be singular.

So for me the answer choice is 'B'.

Re: SC: Faulty voting euipment, confusing ballots, voter error,

@gupta.ab

As ron stated, "had not been counted" is inserted between the noun "4 m to 6 m votes" and the prepositional modifier "of the 100 m". It makes a nonsensical statement.

Re: Building on civilizations that preceded them in coastal Peru

Hi VRajesh, The first thing to check is grammar then meaning and lastly concision. You don't know what exactly author expected to say but can make a good guess by eliminating choices that make the sentence nonsensical. Use of seafood in place of shellfish is not making the sentence nonsensical but f...

Tomorrow, our strength will LAY....

Sentence Correction (4th Ed), page 158/159 Could you please explain how the usage of LAY vs LIE is decided? One usage of "LAY" marked as correct: Yesterday, our strength lay in numbers. I assumed any such usage in present or future tense will be correct too. This is not the case as the usa...

Re: If k not = 0, 1, -1, is 1/k >0?

I'm sure that Ron is not translating in exact mathematical equation but what you need to prove. In case of a fraction to be +ve both nom and denom must have same sign. Since the nom is 1 (and +ve), the denom must be +ve. Hope this clarifies!

if x<0, then sqrt(-x|x|) is

if x<0, then sqrt(-x|x|) is
A. -x
B. -1
C. 1
D. x
E. sqrt(x)

I'm confused for the answer choices A & D. For me both A and D are true.
Solution:
x < 0, so |x| = -x
hence sqrt (-x|x|) is sqrt (x2) which has 2 solutions x and -x.

OA: A (highlight to see it)

Re: Primes & Divisibility

The rule can be explained more subtly but I have this understanding. It is not saying that "j" is divisible by product of 10 and 12. "j" is divisible by 10 and also divisible by 12. Hence you have to take the maximum of each unique prime factor of both numbers. 2: 2 3: 1 5: 1 So ...

Re: if x<0, then sqrt(-x|x|) is

Thanks nitin! But your explanation also has the same issue which I have in my solution. What if I consider sqrt(25) = -5?

However while analysing your solution, I think I got my answer.

The correct solution for sqrt(x2) can be thought of as |x| and then the puzzles fit in.

Re: (x-y) / (x+y) < 1

your rephrasing is not complete. You have assumed one condition and then simplified. So you should not forgot about the first condition. Case 1: what about x+y>0? Under this assumption only you get y>0. Hence in a way to tell the result or inequality in question, we need the values for x and y...

Re: (x-y) / (x+y) < 1

Let me try to explain my way of thinking and hope it will help: when you rephrased the question, you got 2 possible situations with original question. so if any of the provided options or a combination of options eliminates one of the possible solutions, you solved the problem. Now in this case, you...

Re: if x<0, then sqrt(-x|x|) is

The correct solution for sqrt(x2) can be thought of as |x| and then the puzzles fit in. this is correct. it's not just "thought of" as |x|; it actually IS |x|. ...because |x| is always non-negative. this fits the definition of "√" precisely. Thanks, Ron! I'll now remember this...
