If 24 is a factor of H and 28 is a factor of K

My question stems from the chapter 1 problem set, question 8, in the 2005 number properties book. The question asks "If 24 is a factor of H and 28 is a factor of K, must 21 be a factor of HK?" I have no issues with this. However, if the question asked "...must 21 be a factor of H+K?&q...

Solve for x: x(x-5x+6/x)=0

5th ed. Algebra book, p.31. Looking at this question, do I need to distribute the x to both terms in the parentheses first? I looked at the (5x+6)/x portion and tried to eliminate the x in the denominator, leaving me with 4x+6. Is this illegal, and if so, why? Finally, is it always the case that we ...

Simplify: (4^y+4^y+4^y)(3^y+3^y+3^y)

5th ed. Algebra Guide p.45 Q.7

I can simplify this expression to:
(4*4^y)(3*3^y)

but can someone explain how I get from the above, to:
(4^y+1)(3^y+1)

Thanks

life expectancy is defined by the term 2SB/G

5th ed. Algebra strategy guide, ch.6 Formulas problem set, Q.4, p.85: Life expectancy is defined by the formula 2SB/G where S= shoe size, B=average monthly electric bill in dollars, and G = GMAT Score. If Melvin's GMAT score is twice his monthly bill, and his life expectancy is 50, what is his shoe ...

Re: Mgmat quant prob set mistake?????- geometry quad qs

Regarding Tim's post above, is it necessarily the case that if a quadrilateral has 4 equal sides that it's 4 angles will be congruent to their respective opposing side? For instance, the geometry strategy guide says the definition of a Rhombus is that all sides are equal, AND, all opposing angles ar...

Triangle Heights as Perpendicular Bisectors

Hi, Just wondering, is it necessarily the case that if a height is a perpendicular bisector of the base that the triangle must be an isosceles? If the above is true, and a height as a perpendicular bisector of a base means that the triangle must then be isosceles, is this only the case if the height...

Re: Geometry Question Bank #20 : Unknown leg.

So Im still not understanding the previous explanation for why (2) isn't sufficient to some extent, and like the OP, I too chose D for this one. Is the underlying issue here that, despite being given the area of the triangle, the value of the height can still be different depending on which side we ...

Re: Question Bank Geometry #2 "Splitting Triangle"

http://postimg.org/image/tuaw9d5dz/ Hi Ron, the question, and associated pic are at the link above. My question revolves around the idea of this problem creating three similar triangles (as a height is dropped from a right angle). I can clearly see where each triangle's right angle, and hypotenuse a...

Re: Question Bank Geometry #2 "Splitting Triangle"

Found it, good explanations.

I think the question number has changed though. It's now question 2 in the question bank.

Thanks!

Re: Algebra Question Bank #4

Hi again Ron. So for this question, I actually noticed the "like quadratics" but my inclination was to square each side of the equation. This worked out fine for the left side of the equation (assuming I performed my functions properly), and I arrived at 1/(x-y). I did however run into tro...

Re: Algebra Question Bank #4

I definitely did square the left side denominator incorrectly. I took x-y and turned it into x^2 - y^2, instead of (x-y)^2 and recognizing the "square of a diff." I think that would have solved everything. I feel let down about the lack of brilliance on the last post you made, I've come to...
