Question on an old Manhattan challenge problem

Given below is a question from the Manhattan archive of challenge problems. Baseball's World Series matches 2 teams against each other in a best-of-seven series. The first team to win four games wins the series and no subsequent games are played. If you have no special information about either of th...

Re: MGMAT CAT Workings

I also share Kevin's concerns. I observe that I get 4-5 questions @700-800 level right and then go wrong on a 600-700 level question. But the next question is still a 700-800 level one on the MCAT. This is rather generous, as it allows one to compete at the higher level but is this how the real GMAT...

GMAT prep Vs OG

Hi

Are questions from OG repeated on the gmat prep tests? If so, taking the 2 prep tests will not reflect the true ability if we practice the OG exercises prior to taking the tests!
This makes me nervous!

Thanks

DS: If x not equal to -y

Hi Here is a question that stumps me: If x not equal to -y, is (x-y)/(x+y)>1 ? 1) x>0 2) y<0 GMAT's answer is (E) Here is how I solved it: rephrase: is x-y > x+y ? --> is 0 > 2y --> is y < 0? x,y cannot be zero cos x is not equal to -y should rule this out. (2) seems to readi...

Re: DS: If x not equal to -y

Hi elaine1920

I agree with your solution and explanation. I was too saturated yesterday to see something as simple as that!

Thanks.

GMAT prep: Reset and retake

Has anyone tried taking more than 2 tests with GMAT prep by uninstalling and reinstalling the software? Do you see enough of new questions to make the effort worthwhile?

Thanks.

GMAT Focus: Strange behavior

I bought the GMAT focus quant set (3 tests). I took 2 tests and observed the following: Test 1: I had 5 out of 24 incorrect. I fought to complete the test on time and my errors are uniformly strewn throughout the test. I found the test quite challenging as well. GMAT focus reports a score range of: ...

Thinking of signing up for a course

I am thinking of signing up for the live-online MGMAT 9-session course after 1 month of self-study. I have already purchased question banks from MGMAT online and the OG books and MGMAT books from Barnes and Nobles. But these items are included as part of the course. Will MGMAT discount the costs of ...

In the figure above, point P and Q lie on a circle with ...

The GMAT prep q asks for x co-ordinate of point Q given that P(-sqrt(3),1). If I assume that the center O of the circle is teh origin of the co-ordinate system, then I can compute Q. This seems to be GMAT Preps approach. But it is not explicitly given that O is ta (0,0); so every answer choice could...

Thanks nimish.tiwari!

I guess what you say is reasonable. The OG book illustrates some of the basics of geometry where it does seem to take the intersection of x and y axes as the origin.

Re: Probabilty: 2 couples and 1 single person.

Here is how I would approach this problem: Whenever there is a requirement on coupling the position of 2 or more entities, use the following trick: If out of 5 people, 2 must sit together, in how many ways can they be arranged? Let the # of ways this achieved by K. Let us couple the 2 people (treat ...

Re: Probabilty: 2 couples and 1 single person.

shaji When I provided my solution, I did not arrive at it through serendipity nor did I look for a way to somehow match the given answer. I still stand by my solution. In your approach, the number of ways just one family is seated together = 48, both families are seated together = 24 These are indee...

Re: Ratios - Tricky one

I agree with the answer C. It is not mentioned that r,s are integers. So r,s, can take several values to satisfy statement B.

Re: Probabilty: 2 couples and 1 single person.

Shaji

how do you compute the number of ways just one family is seated together = 48? Maybe that will help me understand why you say I have not derived this number.
