Re: Following several years of declining advertsisng sales

Hello! I have a question irrelevant to the problem above but it would be nice to know the answer for the future. I've read this thread and understood that everybody's assuming that "decline/increase in advertising sales" means "decline/increase in percentage of advertising sales"...

Re: Comparisons, M SC 2003 Guide, Urgent, exam tmr!

Hello! To me the right answer ( Three times more students attended the prom this year than did last year ) sounds as if students are compared to last year. My pick would be: The number of students attended the prom this year is three times as great as the number of students attended the prom last ye...

Re: Comparisons, M SC 2003 Guide, Urgent, exam tmr!

Thank you very much for your reply! Though, I'm still not convinced that "Three times more students attended the prom this year than did last year" is correct. This is not OG, so I can question right answers, can't I? All is clear in your example: Clear: I was more X than Y was. I and Y ar...

Re: Heavy commitment by an executive to a course of action

Hello! It seems that nobody has asked it. I'm very confused about the modifier " especially one that has worked well in the past ". Why is there no "to" in front of "one"? Being heavily committed to a course of action, especially to one that has worked well in the past,...

Re: Following several years of declining advertsisng sales

I am trying to understand why choice C is not correct. What does substantial turnover have to do with reorganization. I see the explanation given is that the turnover could be because of reorganization; however, we are trying to focus on the conclusion which is the sales are up because of the reorg...

Re: Comparisons, M SC 2003 Guide, Urgent, exam tmr!

Thank you! I've looked through all the problems in OG13 SC section and read many good explanations here; I don't have any problem with the sentence: "Three times more attended last year than did this year." I understood why "did" is necessary. Without it there is ambiguity: "...

Re: Comparisons, M SC 2003 Guide, Urgent, exam tmr!

Thank you! I think I'm not supposed to write about things unconnected with the topic of the thread, so you can go ahead and wipe this message off. I was thinking of posting it at Manhattan GMAT, but I'm not allowed to that forum. I want to teach this exam so I aimed at 780. Quite ambitious it was, g...

Re: SC:is descended or has descended ?

I like Ron's explanation of Present Perfect very much. It's really enlightening to me; I've never heard about such aspects of this tense. Though, I have a question. I think that Present Perfect in B isn't a mistake. How come the verb "to suggest" is a state verb? Ron wrote that at some poi...

Re: thirteen colonies

I want to summarize some points that can be gathered from this problem as I understood them. First of all, there can be two non-essential appositive modifiers in a row. It's a surprise, but it is apparently possible on the GMAT. Second, regarding this "each"-rule from page 46 SC Guide: it ...

Re: Can a pronoun refer to a clause?

In that particular sentence pronoun doesn't refer to a clause, but what about things in general? Can pronoun "it" refer to a clause? I think that the GMAT doesn't accept it, but I want confirmation. Not until 1974 was she made a nationally recognized figure, as it was televised nationwise....

Re: SC: Pronoun "this, that, these and those"

What are "standalone" pronouns? are they personal pronouns (it, they, them) or demonstrative pronouns (this, that, those, these) that stand alone? As in sentence: I will never buy these shoes; they are too expensive. All I can afford now are those . If I understand correctly, a sentence li...

Re: SC:is descended or has descended ?

Thank you for your response; it is much appreciated! I always read all the messages in a thread before posting in it. I understand that "evidence to suggest" here is ok - evidently, because it's in the official answer. This problem is really good to demonstrate that the GMAT is opposed to ...

2) with some adjectives: http://langust.ru/unit_co/unit022c.shtml Sorry for Russian site. As a matter of fact, it's essentially in English. It isn't full list of possible adjectives, but the usage is quite clear. 3) in idiomatic constructions: [adj] enough to [verb] So [adj] as to [verb] So as to - ...

Re: SC:is descended or has descended ?

As seen from above, "embryologists have found evidence to suggest" doesn't fall under any of the categories above. So, all I can think of now is some sort of a sentence like: I have a key to unlock the door. Is this similar to the sentence in our problem? It seems not. Though, I can't expl...
