Re: Fractions and Ratios

This is simply the rule. 16:1 is the number of students to teachers, which means there is 16 students and 1 teacher for a total of 17 people. So, the proportion of students in the class is 1/17, and the proportion of teachers is 16/17. You can also think about these as probabilities, i.e., out of th...

Re: Question about proportionality

Hi all, I have a question about proportionality versus direct proportionality: Say, the question stem of a DS problem tells me that the revenue of a store increases proportionally to the store's sales. Last year's sales were $500,000 and revenues were $100,000. The question is: How much were this y...

Re: what percent is x of y

First of all, Statement 2 alone can be dismissed. So you are left with A,C,E. Secondly, you are given that x=3y. Because we are dealing with just percents, we do not need actual numbers for X or Y in this scenario. We know that 3*Y = X, no matter what Y and X are. Therefore, X is 3 times larger tha...

Re: If w+x<0, is w-y>0?

I rephrased the question: w+x < 0 0 < w-y ----------- w+ x < w-y ---> x < -y or x+y < 0 so the rephrased question becomes is x+y < 0 1) Clearly solves this problem . Sufficient 2) is an obvious one . Sufficient Why is this method wrong? You have your symbols wrong...If you're g...

Re: If w+x<0, is w-y>0?

sorry misspoke,

you can't use W-Y as you have since you're trying to determine whether it is greater than 0...it's the unknown you're trying to determine.

Re: If w+x<0, is w-y>0?

still don't get it? the point of rephrasing is to tranform a complex question into something simple by manipulating the information given. eg what is % of 34 can be rephrased to what is x. right, but you can't use the question you're trying to solve as an input since you don't know if it's factual....
