Re: GMATPrep

Hi Ron, the starting present participial phrase - 'Rivaling the pyramids... as an achievement' - what kind of a modifier is this? Since it is a present participle with a comma, can we assume it modifies both the verb subject and the verb (hence a verb modifier), and therefore, it need not necessaril...

Re: SC : Humphry Davy

Hi Ron, Apologies for reviving an old thread. With regards to option B, can we not consider 'a Critique' (action noun?) and 'his envisioning of..' (complex gerund) as parallel as action nouns can parallel complex gerunds? (I can see why A is the correct answer and I would pick A given this question....

Profile evaluation 680. Retake?

Hello, I gave my GMAT today and absolutely blew it up (Q50, V32, 680). I miscalculated the break by 38s and that has somehow adversely affected my verbal score. I have been scoring 730-780 both in MGMATs and GMATPrep. So the real score is my biggest shock. I prepared for 2 months, gave GMAT today, e...

Re: Profile evaluation 680. Retake?

Hi Daniel, Thanks for your reply. Do the schools look at the overall score alone or individual scores too? I am worried that there is a quite some gap between my quant and verbal scores. I got my AWA yesterday with a score of 6. I'm aiming at the below schools: Stanford GSB London Business School Ha...

Re: Archaeologists in Michigan have excavated a Native

Dear instructors, I am having the toughest time understanding this CR. This is how I am approaching the problem: Conclusion: the camp dates no longer than 1630. Why? (Premise) european traders were active in the region from 1620 onwards and none of their goods were found at this camp. So author thin...

Re:

Hi Ron, Sorry about bumping an old thread but I'm confused why you call 'might' a present tense construction. I see in the posts that follow this one that 'might' can be used as (i) the past tense of 'may' OR (ii) hypothetical subjunctive. If 'might' in option (D) is correct in the sense of a hypoth...

Present Participial Phrase Modifier

Dear Instructors, The below is a sentence from Official Guide 2015 SC (one of the wrong answer choices) At some point in the past our ancestors suffered an event, greatly reducing their numbers. OG explains that the agent to the participial phrase is subject of the preceding clause - 'our ancestors'...

Re: Present Participial Phrase Modifier

keep in mind: we are NOT saying "crime caused property values to rise". we're saying that the entire action described (= crime went down) is responsible. (similarly, i didn't scare the dogs, although my actions did.) this is actually the whole point of these modifiers: they are specifical...

Re: For the farmer who

Hi Ron, I eliminated E because the comma between the two VERBed modifiers (...provided with high-energy feed , and milked regularly...) didn't seem right to me. All options seemed wrong but went with A despite knowing it didn't make sense. Anyway, my question is how is the comma highlighted in red a...
