Logical referent for pronouns and Parallel Structure.

I have a question on parallel structure and logical referent of a pronoun. Some answer options are eliminated because there are no referents or antecedents for the pronouns that appear in the answer options. Pronouns should refer to either a noun or a gerund preceding them. I am not able to understa...

Adverb or adjective

Is the word 'First' an adjective or an adverb. Consider the examples: 1) It was his first victory. 2) The show was first aired on BBC. 'aired' is a participle. If 'first' is an adjective then how can an adjective modify another adjective(participle). Is there a difference between 'The show was first...

Re: Like vs. As; Who vs. Whom; Do/So

I have a doubt here.

Shouldn't the sentence be 'I like going to the movies just AS my friends [do]' instead of 'I like going to the movies just LIKE my friends [do]'

Re: A Simple question on Parallelism

Hi Pavan, In the example that you came across in OG ( a giant fungus....) 'spawned' and 'extending' are two participles. The past participle is used in the 'passive' case. Here the tentacles are spawned by a single fertilized spore. The present participle is used in 'active' case. The fungus is ext...

Re: Logical referent for pronouns and Parallel Structure.

Good question. The issue in #89 is that "maintaining" is part of a comparison. We cannot use "it" as the second part of the comparison, when "maintaining" is the first. The "it" would be a referent not just for the word "maintaining" but for the who...

Re: SC-MMPI test

I think its because option 'e' doesnt offer proper verb forms to indicate the sequence of events. 'Dated' and 'Biased' are adjectives. 'After' requires a perfect tense.
Need more inputs from the instructors.

Re: Like vs. As; Who vs. Whom; Do/So

Either of the following is correct: (1) Just as my friends do , I like going to the movies. (There is a verb in each clause [bold text], so "as" is used correctly. (2) Like my friends , I enjoy going to the movies. (There is only one verb [bold text], which is shared by the two nouns [und...

Pacing - Verbal Section

Hi , I have taken three CATs now from Manhattan Review. My scores have been constantly dipping. 680 - 660 -650. The Quant section score ranges from 49-51 whereas verbal from 26-30. I am certain that pacing is the issue in the verbal section. There have been about 4-5 consecutive errors towards the e...

Politics - singular / plural ?

What is GMAT's take on a sentence like the one below where the term 'politics' refers to not the subject but the games played by people ?

Politics of the situation was/were complicated.

Re: Pacing - Verbal Section

Thanks Stacey ! Will definitely work on your pointers.

I was under the impression that the earlier questions on the test carried more weightage than the later ones. Hence, I was allocating more time to the first
10-12 questions. Do you concur with this thought ?

Regards,
Anu.

Re: Pacing - Verbal Section

Thanks Ron !

Ever since i read about it, I have been able to save a lot of time using the Split-n-Resplit Strategy on SC qns . Its definitely a great tool. Have dropped the idea of 'more time for early qns' TOTALLY.
Is there any strategy that can speed up CR qns ?

Question Bank - CR Medical Education

This maybe silly but im trying to understand how to isolate the conclusion in an argument. Medical education in the United States has focused almost exclusively on curative medicine, while preventive care has been given scant attention. This is misguided. Medical schools should invest as much time i...
