Scores from my 5 MGMAT CATs. Need advice. GMAT in 5 days

by arjungupta25 Thu Jul 21, 2011 9:25 am

Hi,
I am taking GMAT exam in coming 5 days. This is my second attempt and I scored 650 in my first one.

I purchased the 6 online CATs offered by MGMAT and found them very useful in my preparation.

I have been scoring consistently near 690 in last few tests. However, I find that the quants in MGMAT CAT is of higher difficulty than actual GMAT and I often run out of time to finish my quants section. My quants scaled score is around 48 in past few MGMAT CATs. I personally consider myself a good students of mathematics and have consistently score 49-50 on other simulation exams (eg. GMAT Prep, tests by other companies).

In verbal I have been scoring between 34-39 (scaled score) and may improve if i can concentration better while attempting my verbal section.

I wish to have your inputs on my current preparation levels. I can also send you excel sheets of my scores in MGMAT CAT if you require me to do. Do you think that a score 690 on these difficult MGMAT CATs might actually represent a 700+ score on actual GMAT?

I won't consider your inputs a guarantee of my actual performance but your inputs will be very valuable to make a personal assessment of my current preparation levels.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi again.

There is one more important query that I have regarding the scoring pattern adopted by MGMAT CAT. I wasn't able to find a more suitable thread to ask this question, so I'm posting my query under my previous question.

I have observed that even if you have made 6-7 errors till 20th question in either of the section, you still have an opportunity to reach back to 99 percentile from say a 75 percentile level. However, if you compare this scoring pattern to that of other CATs, of reputed companies, or even GMAT Prep, you will notice that it's almost impossible to achieve a scaled score of 49-50 once you have committed 6-7 mistakes early in the test.

I wish to know that to what extent does MGMAT CAT mimics the actual GMAT scoring algorithms? It is a very important for me to make sure whether the GMAT will allow me to get back to top percentile even if i answer all the questions correctly after making some errors early on in the exam, since I might have to let a few questions go early on in order to save myself from running out of time in the end.

I know that MGMAT instructors must deal with plethora of questions every day, but please consider that I have my GMAT in few days and I'm relying heavily on the material purchased from MGMAT.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi guys,

Just a word of advice: If you keep adding comments to the post asking for a response, it will simply move to the back of the queue.
At least that's my understanding of it.

Thank you Sunil.

Arjun, I apologize, but we were overwhelmed with questions and by bumping yours to the top you took it to a lower priority in the queue. I hope that your GMAT went well.

As for our algorithm compared to that of the GMAT, it's my understanding that ours duplicates it quite well. I can tell you that I scored the exact same score, 770, on the MGMAT CAT as on my real GMAT. We have data on the standard deviation of our CATs versus those of the tests on mba.com and have found that ours are almost identical, with a little more variance on our tests.

Hope this helps!
