Score dropped in GMAT prep 3

by Yash VardhanS404 Fri Sep 25, 2015 8:48 am

Hi

I've been studying extensively for the GMAT for the past 5 months. I took a mock test GMAT prep 2 last week, scored 740 ( Q49 V41 ) but today my score dropped substantially on GMAT prep 3, 640 ( Q 44 V33 ).

I've taken all the manhattan CATs and the results are as follows

CAT 1 Completed 7 July 2015 : 670 ( Q45 V36 )
CAT 2 Completed 8 August 2015 : 680 ( Q46 V36 )
CAT 3 Completed 30 August 2015: 670 ( Q44 V37 )
CAT 4 Completed 5 September 2015: 660 ( Q44 V36 )
CAT 5 Completed 16 September 2015: 630 ( Q42 V34 )
CAT 6 Completed 22 September 2015 : 690 ( Q44 V39 )

GMAT PREP 1 Completed 20 August 2015 : 640 ( Q44 V34 )
GMAT PREP 2 Completed 19 September 2015 : 740 ( Q49 V41 )
GMAT PREP 3 Completed 25 September 2015 : 640 ( Q44 V34 )

I was about to take gmat test week but after today's score I'm not sure what to do next. I have practiced a lot from varied sources mainly manhattan and all the official material available ( 404 question bank, OG 15, 12, 10 Verbal Review 1,2 ).

Please advice should I take the gmat or do I need more studying to get a 700+ ?

I don't know yet - we need to figure out why your score dropped. Then we'll know what to do to lift it again.

It's possible that your 740 was artificially inflated - ie, that your level is not actually that high. This can happen if you skip earlier sections (essay, IR). This can also happen if you see questions that you'd seen before.

It's also possible that you had timing or mental fatigue issues (or both!) on that last test, in which case we need to figure out what they are and how to avoid them happening again on the real test.

Read this:
https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/blog ... t-wrong-2/

Which aspects do you think apply in your case? (Note: GMATPrep doesn't give you a ton of data to work with. I have heard that there is a way to "unlock" the per-question timing data from the underlying software but haven't tried it myself. You can try googling it.)

Next, compare the two tests against each other to try to figure out why one is so much higher than the other. Look at your trajectory - did you get a lot more wrong, clustered in a short range of the section? This really drops your score (especially towards the end of the section, since there are few questions left by which you can recover). Also look at careless mistakes - how often did you miss questions that you really did know how to do? Some small amounts of bad luck may contribute - getting a few more questions in areas of weakness. That wouldn't account for 100 points, but could account for 20-40.

And just look generally at what you did well on the previous test that didn't go so well on this test. You can look at the overall question types but try to dive into sub-types as well - eg, algebra vs. word problems vs. geometry vs. etc.

Then come back and tell us what you discover.
