SC: When the members of a married couple have

by direstraits007 Sat Sep 26, 2009 2:48 am

When the members of a married couple have discovered that they are incompatible, they should divorce and marry someone quite different than their previous mate.

A. discovered that they are incompatible, they should divorce and marry someone quite different than
B. discovered that they were incompatible, they should divorce and marry someone quite different than
C. discovered that they are incompatible, they should divorce and each should marry someone quite different from
D. discovered that they were incompatible, they should divorce and marry someone quite different from
E. discovered that they were incompatible, they divorce and marry someone quite different from

OA: C

My take is on D. I think C can't be the right answer bcoz of "their" in the non-underlined part. I mean C is using "each" which is followed by "their". This constructions seems wrong to me. If it were "his/her" then C would be the answer.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks!

your reasoning make sense, but the main point i rejected D was TENSE

When the members of a married couple have discovered that they were incompatible, they should divorce and marry someone quite different from their previous mate.

have - were := not compatible

I choose C because
have and are ==> compatible.

Were -- implies past tense.. hence 3 down. (simple)

Between A and C:

"different from" is more appropriate than "different than" --> Idiom

Also , in A: They should divorce and [they should] marry someone...
They shou divoice is correct... but they shoudl marry gives a incorrect meaning.
Plural - they.. cannot marry someone (singular).. hence A is wrong for that reason too

In C: They should divorce and each should marry someone

Each - singular = someone - singular

(my 2 cents)

Agreed ! But "sumone" again is a singular...right?...so dont u think it should be his/her rather than "their"...

Thanks.

ugh. all of these choices have serious problems.

"each" is very clearly singular, so the corresponding pronoun should be "his or her", not "their". so, (c) doesn't work.

...but "they should marry someone different from their previous mate" doesn't make sense, either, since it implies that both of them should marry the same person.

ick. terrible. i would just throw this problem into the metaphorical trash can.

ha ha...
I can see one more funny thing Ron ! Whenever I've been to www.ManhattanGMAT.com, I see ManhattanGMAT advertises 800score tests also, vice versa. But at the same time we realize their questions sucks. I think this is the 3rd or 4th question from 800 score tests, which I posted on the forum and all of them got wrong OA's. Well my intent here is not to accuse manhattanGMAT or 800Score, but as a GMAT preparation student, its very difficult to find the right source to prepare.

Thanks!
