SC Query

by saumil5408 Wed Jul 27, 2011 2:41 am

Hi Stacey,

Could you please tell why option B is wrong. I know it sounds awkward.

Here is the question:

Robert R wood's experimental result of there being temperature rise in a glass chamber because of warm air rising and mixing with cool air is the foundation of the greenhouse effect.

(A) same as underline
(b) of temperature rise that takes place in a glass chamber because of warm air rising and mixing with cool air is the foundation of the greenhouse effect
(c) that temperature rise takes place in a glass chamber because of warm air rising and mixing with cool air is the foundation of the greenhouse effect

Correct answer is c. Could you please explain the reasons? Also why b is wrong.

I had taken this question from beat the gmat forum.

Now I'm unable to find it, so cannot provide the other options. But I'm pretty sure the rest of the options were trivial and without a doubt incorrect.

An easy distinction is the idiom.

I need to say "the experimental result THAT temperature rise takes place . . .", not "the experimental result OF temperature rise takes place . . . ".

I'm a bit confused .

Policy makers remain concerned about the prospect of inflation, although there are few signs of increasing energy prices driving up the cost of other goods so far.

In this question ( which appeared on my MGMAT CAT exam) - the answer key mentions that a prepositional phrase cannot have a 'NOUN + VERBing' construction as it's object .

Here all choices use 'because of warm air rising' ; but is this still correct ?

can you post the full question with all the answer choices so we can help you further? there are grammar problems with C as written by the original poster, so the text provided cannot be the correct answer..
