SC quantities in comparision issue

by Jeremy.gould19 Fri Nov 30, 2012 2:34 pm

"Because of less availability and greater demand for scientific research, platinum remains consistently expensive, like gold."

correct sentance is:

Because of decreased availability and increased demand in scientific research, platinum remains expensive, like gold.

To me, the simplest main issue with the sentance is "remains consistently" expensive is redundant.

However, another reason why the test explanation said the sentance was wrong was because less and greater are illogical in the comparison (breeding the question less or greater then what?) and increased and decreased are more appropriate here. I get how different words should be used for countable and non-countable nouns but this comparison doesn't quite seem to fit that mold. Are there any other words that conform similar to the rule tested her for less/greater as opposed to increased/decreased?

Maybe I'm missing the point or looking at the comparison the wrong way

Thanks!

Take a look at this thread about this question: post3884.html I'm guessing that it will help straighten things out for you. :-)
