* SC: measuring or measured

by cesar.rodriguez.blanco Thu Aug 13, 2009 11:00 am

I do not understand the difference in meaning between measuring and measured in this SC. Furthermore, I do not know why the OA is correct:

As a result of a new technique that combines light from two powerful telescopes, astronomers have recently identified the torus at the center of the active galactic nucleus NGC 1068 as a warm compact structure composed of dust and gas and measuring several light-years across.

Study this example:

Panda bears resemble (active voice) teddy bears but are armed (passive voice) with sharp teeth. Panda bears are bad-tempered and should be not stroked.

Resembling (active participle) teddy bears but armed (passive (past) participle)) with sharp teeth, panda bears...

i can see only parallelism issue for this problem.

torus as X and Y

so measured is appropriate.

if you make it as "measuring" - it changes the meaning as still continuing. This is not the intended meaning. :-)

I think the answer to this question is measuring. Please share your opinion

I'll remove the prepositional phrase at the center of the active galactic nucleus NGC 1068 to make the sentence read easier.

astronomers have recently identified the torus as a warm compact structure composed of dust and gas and measuring several light-years across.

now let's put the different options and see what happens

(C) astronomers have recently identified the torus as a warm compact structure composed of dust and gas and measured several light-years across.

here the sentence can read

astronomers have recently identified the torus and [have recently] measured light-years across.

astronomers have recently measured light-years across, doesn´t seem right to me.

so the options should modify the torus

OK let's then focus on that part.

the torus as a warm compact structure composed of dust and gas and measured several light-years across

rewriting this
the tours measured several light-years across. I think that this is not correct.
Something measures X rather than something measured X.

so measured is out.

(B)

astronomers have recently identified the torus as a warm compact structure composed of dust and gas and measures several light-years across.

consider the following rewriting

astronomers have recently identified the torus measures several light-years across

this doesn't seem correct either. I don't know whether this is a run-on sentence or a fragment, I don't remember exactly the definition.

(A)
astronomers have recently identified the torus as a warm compact structure composed of dust and gas and measuring several light-years across.

If we rewrite as we did in option B

astronomers have recently identified the torus measuring several light-years across

measuring several light-years across modifies the torus, saying that the torus measures several light-years across

Please cite the source (author) of this problem. We cannot reply unless a source is cited (and, if no source is cited, we will have to delete the post!). Thanks.

Additionally, I have some concerns about the "composed of dust and gas and..." part . The "of X and Y and ...." structure is possibly OK, but possibly problematic--your disagreements revolve around what needs to be parallel, and I think the two "and"s may be part of the problem. Thus, I'd be really interested in whether the source of this question is reliable.

FYI for future: that is not a source. That is a location where the problem has been posted by someone else.

A source is the author of the problem. For copyright reasons, we have to source all problems (give proper credit to the author).
